SAFE files elearning courses
How time flies, it has been 2 years since we launched the SAFE Files elearning courses.
It is considered essential from a practical and legal viewpoint to do a refresher course on these important subjects as the knowledge learnt in the original course fades over time and the information provided may alter due to changes in legislation or community standards. Best practice is to have this refresher after two years and accordingly this is what MEGT has decided to do.
Staff who completed the SAFE Files elearning courses in September 2014 are now due for re-enrolment and will receive an email from MEGT Learning and Development advising that they have been enrolled in the SAFE Files courses.

This year MEGT would like to ensure all staff have the best possible opportunity to enjoy the festivities, and reduce the likelihood of anyone being unable to attend.
As such, line managers of each department/team will be allocated a budget, giving each team the opportunity to organise their own Christmas event.
Important information:
- The date and time of celebrations are to be decided by the department/team but must be outside of normal business hours or within an allocated lunch break time.
- There will not be a Melbourne metro Christmas party as has been in previous years, however divisions and teams are more than welcome to come together and organise a joint celebration.
In addition, all permanent MEGT staff will take the three days off between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day without deduction from Annual Leave. This is a gift from MEGT and is in recognition of the contribution and out of hours work staff perform.
This year the Christmas Closedown dates are Wednesday, 28 December 2016 to Friday, 30 December 2016. Staff will be required to return to work on Tuesday, 3 January 2017.
If you have any questions, please speak to your line manager directly.

VETtrak Trainer Portal
The Trainer Portal has created efficiencies for phone and email contacts. The process to complete and upload Contact Records is taking a little more time but please continue to use:
The hardcopy Contact Record
Complete and physically sign the Contact Record, scan the document and upload it via the portal.
Electronic Contact Record
Complete the Contact Record in Word, convert it to PDF, digitally sign the PDF and upload the PDF Contact Record via the portal.Trainers are also uploading induction documents via the portal and saving a lot of time.
Support
Nina Louise and Michelle are responding to queries and offering support via elearning.support@megt.com.auThey are also available via phone, but contacting them via this email address can speed up their response when they are jumping in and out of meetings.
The next Q&A session is scheduled for 20th September at 12 noon, so please bring questions and feedback.
If in the interim you have any further suggestions to improve our processes and reduce paperwork please let us know.
Online Delivery Process
Training delivery process
- Any training delivery and/or assessment must include at a minimum a phone contact.
- You may have already received the Moodle/Catapult assessment, 3rd Party, FCSO however a phone call needs to be made to confirm understanding of the unit, e.g. verbal questions. Then this is recorded, on a Contact Record, that a unit has been assessed over the phone, and the Contact Record is uploaded via the Trainer Portal.
- A student may email to ask you to open another unit in Moodle/Catapult. You open the unit, however a phone call must be made to engage with the student about their learning and explain all assessment tasks.
- Complete a Contact Record stating that a unit has been commenced over the phone, and upload it via the Trainer Portal.
Unit selection process
- The unit selection for each qualification is to be completed prior to the first visit.
- Email the employer and/or student the course outline and call the employer and student to discuss the unit or stream options.
- Notify administration of the units or streams selected via the Trainer Portal. Administration need to be notified of the stream selection for Certificate III in Business before the first visit so they can upload the units into Catapult for you and the student to access.
- At the first visit, deliver 2 units
- Record the details of the visit on a Contact Record and upload into the Trainer Portal.
These processes have been added to the Trainer SOPS.

LLN Best Practice Strategies for Indigenous Learners
Approximately 44% of Indigenous Australians have
low literacy levels in Standard Australian English, compared with 19% of
non-Indigenous Australians (ABS 1996). Literacy difficulties are compounded for
Indigenous students because English is often their second, third or fourth
language.
Proficiency in literacy and numeracy increases
the ability to successfully access and complete vocational education and
training (VET) courses. There is currently little information and support for
teachers dealing with this issue. This guide aims to assist teachers by
providing a set of ‘good practice’ strategies for designing effective literacy
and numeracy programs for Indigenous VET students, and for building effective
literacy and numeracy support into existing VET courses.
